The Glass Outhouse - Twentynine Palms - California

Yes, you read that right. The GLASS Outhouse. And actually, there are two of them on the site, both free to use 🙃.

The full name of this awesome place is The Glass Outhouse Art Gallery.

The Glass Outhouse Art Gallery is a unique desert gem featuring monthly exhibits that showcase the work of talented local artists, photographers, and musicians. The indoor gallery space truly celebrates the vibrant desert arts community. In addition, the property boasts an amazing (ever-growing) array of whimsical found-object installations spread across the grounds. True to its name, the site includes two real glass outhouses! They are both available for use and apparently are a big hit. Open year-round and always free to the public, the Glass Outhouse invites visitors to explore creativity in all its forms against a stunning desert backdrop.

I had read about the gallery and it was on my list of places to visit, but hadn’t really planned out a visit. But as I was cruising Hwy 62 on my way to The End of The World, I spotted a huge Pepsi can. Like a ten-foot-tall Pepsi can, sitting amongst a bunch of cool stuff. “Hmmmm, I need to check that out if I return from The End of The World,” I mumbled to myself. And so, on the return trip from The End of The World, I stopped to see what the Pepsi can was all about and found that it was part of The Glass Outhouse Art Gallery. Nice.

Here below, are some of my favorite installations on the grounds:

The little Wayside Chapel is a beautiful, permanent addition to the grounds and was added about ten years ago. It is available for weddings.

Skeletons appear to be a popular theme throughout the grounds.

And one of the two Glass Outhouses. I wasn’t in need, but if I was, I would have tried it out. The only way anyone outside would be able to see in would be if the sunlight angle hit one of the walls just right, and even then, it wouldn’t be very clear.

There is a lot to see at the Glass Outhouse Art Gallery. These were just a few of the sights that caught my eye. Definitely worth a visit!
